The intensity of the city, with its never-ending host of curious eyes, followed him like a gigantic tentacle, right to the foot of Haji Malang. But as he rose through the steep climb it became obvious to Max he was entering a completely different world, one entirely populated by sadhus. It was with a wave of relief that he remembered the old man’s words –

“You are going home.”

Silent encouragement…

Welcoming smiles…

The feeling of having shared something great.

“You are Max – you will never be alone.”

He felt eternal, thrilled like the first cave-man to put a scratch on the wall. Clear understanding shone from the eyes of the sadhus who lined his path. Everywhere he looked he was met with the silent nod of assent.

Yes…

We understand you…

Yes, we’re with you!

With each step higher into the brilliant morning light, Max felt a further surge of relief. Here, it seemed, he might get a little time out of the spotlight.

Time to yourself…

Time to reflect on what you did… and what happened to you…

Time … to work it all out.

Then, with a jolt of pure joy, he saw the familiar, smiling face of David Brown, waiting up ahead on the path.

“Well done mate, well done,” he said, embracing Max warmly.

“What the… How come you’re up here?” Max asked, perplexed.

Wait a second…

That guy over there… he’s the one who took you out that night…

Mate… that’s the one rupee man.

The sadhu nodded to Max, and smiled at the memory.

“You know each other! This is unbelievable! Dave, come on… tell me… what the fuck is going on?”
