In the face of tremendous pressure to release a preview of his speech, the President maintained a strict silence until Christmas Eve. By then the largest gathering of people ever known in the history of America had mushroomed outside the White House. The population of Washington had tripled. A battery of press had massed like an invading army and the President was buzzing with excitement as he stepped out into a sea of flickering candles that felt like they held the last hope of the planet.

“Now… I had a speech prepared for this evening. It’s here… in my pocket,” the President said, tapping his heart. “It’s taken me three weeks to write… and I could read it for you if you’d like… but I’d rather not. Frankly, written words could never hope to describe the feeling we have here this evening. So, if you wouldn’t mind, I’d rather speak to you from the heart.”

The President looked out at a sea of smiling faces.

“Isn’t this wonderful.”

The crowd erupted in a roar of approval and resounding applause.

“Ladies and gentlemen, as I stand here this evening, I’m simply amazed,” he continued as a hush of anticipation slowly descended. “I’m amazed by the power of social media. Amazed by the pace of change. Amazed by the sudden emergence of something we all knew was buried deep within us, but never imagined we’d ever see – the sudden emergence of our own better nature.
I’m amazed that here we are, millions of us gathered, not just in Washington, but in cities, towns and villages all over the world, to focus on an issue which has mystified us since the beginning of time.”
