“It doesn’t have quite the same promise, does it?” Max couldn’t help saying, into the silence.

“Don’t worry Max,” Shard laughed. “Those who read the Koran know very well the extent of the promise. They don’t need more promises. They just need to be reminded that the promise of the Last Day is not exclusive to Islam. They need to understand that Islam only makes one distinction – between believers and nonbelievers, and that this debate will be finally put to rest on the Last Day.”

“Do you actually know what’s going to happen next?” Max asked cautiously.

Shard chuckled quietly.

“Of course I know,” he said.

“Are you going to tell us?”

“No.”

Funny about that…

“Why not?”

“Because I’ve already told you all you need to know.”

“But,” Max pleaded. “I still don’t get it.”

“What is it you still don’t get Max?” Shard said, impatiently.

“I still have a problem with the words.”

“They simply describe life on the Last Day!”

“But… what do they mean… exactly?” Max persisted.
