“Oh right… of course… the Committee.”

“The Committee for Un-American Activities Abroad – your employer.”

My employer?” Buck asked quizzically.

“The Committee still has control of this mission.”

“I see.”

Buck leant forward –

“So what’s the hold-up? What are we supposed to be doing here?”

“As I told you this morning – waiting.”

“What – we are meant to sit here and wait for your Committee to decide what to do?”

“You are.”

“I see.”

Buck grinned at Marlon –

“And you?”

“I have other – more important – things to do.”

“More important… like what?”

Buck shot Julia an amused glance.

“Well, if you must know,” Marlon said, puffing himself up, “I’ve been summoned to Washington. The President wants to speak to me – personally.”

The President?

“Really?” Julia said sarcastically.

“Yes… really,” Marlon replied, forcefully.

Julia reached for the wine – what marvellous news!

“And why would that be?” Buck probed.

Marlon’s face contorted into a sneer of contempt.

“What’s this?” he said. “So surprised! You can’t imagine why the President of America would want to waste time with a broken down old hack like me – is that it?”


Marlon sat up straight –

“Because he’s a lightweight!”

Julia was astounded –

“A lightweight?”

“Yes, a yellow-bellied, weak-kneed, thin-skinned lightweight!”

It was the explosion they’d been waiting for all evening –

“And I’m damned if I know why they let him in on something as simple as this. It should have remained strictly off the record. In fact it should be over already. It would have been… if that woman they chose had…”
